Description: Established from the tumor of a 60-year-old Japanese man with moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate which was invasive into muscle layer; cell line was established from a cervical lymph node metastasis which occurred seven years after initial treatment of the primary tumor; the tumor metastasized not only to the lungs, but also to the brain; described as anchorage-independent and tumorigenic in nude mice

Description: The CAL-27 cells are established from the poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue removed from a 56-year-old man before treatment in 1982. CAL 27 cells are epithelial, polygonal with a highly granular cytoplasm. Immunocytochemical studies show strong positive staining with anti keratin antibodies. The cells do not grow well in semi-solid medium. Marked inhibition of thymidine incorporation was observed in the presence of VP16 (etoposide), CCNU (1-[2-chloroethyl]-3-cyclohexyl-1-nitrosourea), VM26 (teniposide), ADM (adriamycin), CPA (cyclophosphamide), and MTX (methotrexate). CAL 27 cells were resistant to treatment with VDS (vindesine sulfate), CDP (cis-platinum) or ACTD (actinomycin D).

Description: Established from the surgically removed fragment of a tongue lesion from a 69-year-old man with moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue in 1983 (prior to therapy)

Description: The FaDu cell line which is from a squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx and established from a patient from Calcutta, India. The cell line has a population doubling time of approximately 50 hours. Ultrastructural observation reveals the presence of bundles of tonofilaments in the cells and desmonsomal regions distributed at the boundaris of adjacent cells. The cell line is susceptible to infection by some RNA- and DNA-containing viruses.

Description: The ES-2 cell line was established from a surgical tumor specimen taken from a 47 year old black woman. This cell line was isolated from a poorly differentiated ovarian clear cell carcinoma.Initially, the cells were grown in soft agar.The cells exhibit low to moderate resistance to a number of chemotherapeutic agents including doxorubicin, cisplatin, carmustine, etoposide and cyanomorpholinodoxorubicin (MRA-CN). ES-2 cells express low levels of P glycoprotein.
