Cellular dehydration increases the local electrolyte concentration, changes the pH, and denatures some proteins for these reasons, causing disruption of the internal spatial structure of the cell. As a result, the lysosomal membrane is damaged and lysosomal enzymes are released, causing damage to the structural components of the cell, swelling of the mitochondria, loss of function, and impairment of energy metabolism. The lipid-like protein complex on the cell membrane is also easily disrupted causing changes in cell membrane permeability and loss of cell contents.
