What happens during the S phase?

The S phase, occurring between the G1 and G2 phases of the cell cycle, is when DNA replication and much of the DNA repair activity occurs in cells. DNA replication is thought to proceed as large factories, consisting of large clusters of proteins, at the DNA replication fork.
