What is the principle of Annexin-V staining?

In the early stages of apoptosis, cell membrane markers are changed. In this case, phosphatidylserine is ectopically turned over and Annexin-V binds specifically to it with high affinity in the presence of calcium ions. Such positive Annexin-V staining indicates that the cell is in an early apoptotic state.
