What is the method of operation of the phase contrast microscopy test used to check for mycoplasma contamination in cell culture?

Cells are planted on coverslips placed in the culture flask and removed after 24 hours. When observed with a phase contrast oil microscope, mycoplasma appears as dark microscopic particles on the cell surface and between the cells.
